Huston we have a problem!

I never though I would complain about longer daylight hours, however, they are proving incredibly problematic for the timings of the performance.

One of the main reasons for which the idea of performing outside excited me, was due to the ideal being of darkness, in order to add to my performance

However, as the it is still light currently (9.pm) I feel as though this would take away from the performance, and the need for the placement down an alley, as the daylight creates a sense of safety.

Because of this, I have now decided that after this snag, I am going to perform my piece in Studio 2 of the Lpac. Why the space is compatible to the piece:

– Dark room

– Full access to lighting, sound etc.

– Curtains enable sectioning of the audience – a smaller space in which entrapment can be sensed

Although incredibly disappointed, I feel as though this decision is for the best, and now I can concentrate on other aesthetic elements for the performance, but unfortunately, no green flames 🙁

Playing with Poetics

CREATIVE DAYS

I took the stimulus of Medusa and tried, for the first time (in a very long time) to write a poem. And here’s what happened:

You made me this way, ugly, angry and mad
My hair full of snakes
A life full of mistakes
And now I am the one labelled as bad
Immortality now unappealing after the things I have seen
I roam this world alone,
Adhering to your throne
As my skin, is slowly turning green.

Prometheus, my love, how my heart beats for you
The strength Of your mind
You are the only one of your kind
And now my hope is broken in two.

My being now defines me, I am truly a woman scorned
My breath now making a stench
My soul is now longing for something to quench
The longing left since the day infidelity dawned

Mocking our relationship, and the pieces didn’t fit
He fell for another woman’s touch
To him it didn’t seem much
So I’m sorry that I ever gave a shit

So now Prometheus, how is life treating you as stone?
The way you begged in your strife
Making promises of a new life
Now no talking, whispering, no ability to moan

Very much so, work in progress. The rhyming pattern within the verses is a constant ABBA structure, a simple yet affective rythmic pattern that allows the piece to have pace.

– Iambic pentameter allows frequent, steady rhythm

– Stressed and unstressed syllables alternating allows a subliminal beat to the poem

THE NEXT STEP

Try OTHER poetic structures in breaks within the story. Add a sense of uncanny through the use of pattern in lyrics – is this achievable?

Poetry in Solo Performance

Todays session was thought provoking to say the least. We discussed a class member’s poetry in depth.

As I have recently been studying the patterns within poetry within the anothology of Thomas Hardy’s work for my English dissertation, I have been thinking about the way in which a solo performance can be structured through the use of rhythmic pattern.

American horror story is an american television show with the likes of actresses Jessica Lange and Karthy Burke amongst the cast. Writers Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk are talented writes. Also creators of Glee (hold on, I KNOW what you’re thinking), have written an anthology television series, in which they take the concept of infamous, malevolent figures such as Dr. Death (the doctor notorious for performing obscure operations on twins) and add their stories into a larger picture.  Continuing loosely upon these lines, and relating to the previously explored female characters, from both non-fictional and fictional history, including infamous historical figures and Greek mythological characters, I have decided to write an autobiographical monologue, written in verse to depict the story behind the legend of the Medusa.

Medusa is an interesting figure within the legends of Greek Mythology. For me, she is a symbolm of power, with the ability to turn humans to stone, through her sight alone.

Reasons for Medusa

–          Vast use in modern culture: adverts, cartoons, sci-fi representations and literature

–          Strong female characteristics is an attraction – The medusa can turn people to stone, after receiving a curse. This heightens powerful characteristics that begin to define her.

–          Throughout writings of Medusa, stories have varied. I would like to create my own take on the character.

–          GREEN: There’s something powerful behind the imagery of green skin and the snakes in the hair. Aesthetically, this would be very interesting to explore.
