Green Flames

My tutor has recently asked someone familiar with pyrotechnics in performance for advice on how to create green effects using fire, during performance. This was the response:
Hi Donald,

Is it a real fire? seems unlikely on stage.  If it is then use some fine iron filings – they will not flash green but with some trick lighting…

Anything else to chuck into a fire will be too toxic – Barium Sulphate would be the thing but will do you no good it touched / breathed / eaten etc.

Depends how often they have to do it during the course of a play.  If it is many times then pyrotechnics will cost too much – do it with light.

If you want pyrotechnics then there are green flashes http://www.lemaitreltd.com/p/Theatrical-Flashes/gGwSsnXIvV8

Or green smoke

Or green flames

As for H&S, risk assess, line of sight for person firing, all these products come with a specification sheet and safe working distances, non flammable costume, turn off smoke detectors.

Best of luck,
